OIL SAMPLING TIPS

Engine Oil Sampling

Taking ENGINE OIL samples
Run engine to operating temperature.
With Sample Point.
At low idle remove dust cap from sampling point and wipe clean and draw a small amount of oil into a waste oil container for disposal, then proceed to fill sample bottle from the sample point.Replace dust cap.
Without Sample Point.
Run engine to operating temperature.Stop engine. Using a vacuum pump, insert plastic tubing into pump and attach to the sample bottle, cut tubing to dipstick length, insert tubing into dipstick hole and draw off the sample.

Dispose of used tubing and waste oil safely and responsibily. Please remember that HOT oil can be dangerous particularly to the skin and eyes.

Hydraulic Oil Sampling

Sample Point Example

HYDRAULIC OIL Sampling
Run machinery to operating temperature.
Oil Sample from Tank.
Remove tank filler cap.Always check to make sure that any tank pressure is released.Remove tank strainer if fitted. Using the vacuum pump, insert tubing into pump and attach the sample bottle, insert tubing into the tank and draw off the sample.
Oil Sample from Sample Point.
Whilst machine is running at low idle remove dust cover from sampling point and wipe clean, attach correct sample nozzle to plastic tubing and drain off a small amount into a waste oil container, then draw off the sample into the bottle.

Always take care when handling HOT oil and working near machinery that is running.Dispose of waste oil and contaminated materials safely.

Information Label

Complete the information label with as much detail as you can provide, pay particular attention to Machine ID/Serial no/Plant no, sample date, hours/mileage, oil change/oil added, type/brand of oil and viscosity and also add any comments or queries that you may have.
Be sure to mark/identify the bottle and the label with the same ID mark.Make sure that the sample bottle is capped securely and is sealed inside the resealable bag(in case of leakage) and then place the information label and the bottle into the Jiffy Bag.

Filtration of Oil

Contaminated and Clean oil Samples

The two samples above show the colour of contaminated Mobil 380 Gear Oil (LEFT) ISO 23/19 and the same oil (RIGHT) after additional filtration ISO 16/13.The sample was taken from a quarry cone crusher lubrication and cooling system and the contaminated oil contained high levels of dirt/dust and metal particles. Oil analysis identified some bearing wear.
FA-ST Filtration Analysis Services Technology carried out 'on site' filtration to clean the oil.
